Stranger Within

A little generic but still worth checking out. Has some creepy elements but still feels made-for-TV. I say B-
"I'm just glad that your here and you're willing to help me." After living through a nightmare, Hollywood star Emily Moore (Warren) and her husband Robert (Baldwin) decide to take a trip to clear her mind and recharge. On their first night a woman in hysterics shows up talking about a terrible accident and the two decide to help her. Little by little she begins to wonder what the girl really wants from them. My expectations for this were not that high mainly because of the cast. I will admit that the movie isn't bad but it is basically a made-for-TV movie with nudity. This is a perfect example of why I try not to watch trailers for movies before I watch the movie. If I went off the trailer I would expect an exciting tense thriller. While this was tense in some parts it was a little slow. The "twist" is something that you can see coming but it was still a good idea for the movie. A lot of times the ending can make or break a movie. This is the rare time where the ending left me...
Waste
This movie is the worst ever made bad acting bad script bad
Bad everything.....AVOID at all cost bad bad bad...
I KNOW ABOUT SOPHIE
Emily (Estella Warren) is an actress who is married to Robert (William Baldwin), a psychologist. Emily has issues, especially having to deal with the fact her friend Sophie (Katia Winter) killed herself. Emily is later kidnapped and tortured by an unknown assailant. Her husband takes her away to an island as a get away, only to have Sarah (Sarah Butler) show up, a woman who just lost her boyfriend at a nearby cliff accident.

This is a film where you suspect the twist is coming. The actors were less than convincing in their roles in an improbable plot that felt phoney. The film is fairly boring, even during the 'exciting" parts.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, rape, nudity (Sarah Butler)

The Smurfs Christmas Carol

A spiritual successor to the Hanna-Barbera cartoon show
The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol takes the traditional Charles Dickens story and puts its own smurfy spin on it, having it be about Grouchy and his refusal to celebrate Christmas. It starts off with 3D CGI, but then it shifts to 2D animation when Grouchy gets visited by the three Smurfs of Christmas, played by Smurfette, Brainy, and Hefty in that order. The voices for this special were great, using the actors from the first live-action Smurfs movie with the exception of Papa Smurf (who is voiced by Jack Angel) and Smurfette (who is voiced by Melissa Sturm). The story itself is entertaining, though it's not anything you haven't seen before a hundred other times. The animation is a modern-day improvement over the Smurfs cartoon show specials from the 1980s, having been created by Duck Studios, but isn't so different that fans of the cartoon show can't find themselves enjoying it. Overall it's worth a purchase.
This is a wonderful new holiday classic
This is fun to watch for the holiday season. This is almost like the classic holiday specials in the Smurfs television series.
very good for my granddaughter
Recommend for children of all ages
good quality and loved by my granddaughter one of her favorites

Jesse Stone: The Complete Set

The Evolution Of Jesse Stone: A Pitch Perfect Tom Selleck Headlines 8 Made-For-TV Endeavors
Note: A brief mention about pricing. While it's great to get all eight of the Jesse Stone films together in one convenient shipment, many have been around at bargain pricing for years. You may want to do a bit of shopping for a price configuration that makes sense to you if the ask here seems a little high. This collection does house all 8 previously released DVDs in a new box with a replica of Jesse's PPD ball cap as additional swag.

Included:
2005: Stone Cold
2006: Night Passage
2006: Death In Paradise
2007: Sea Change
2009: Thin Ice
2010: No Remorse
2011: Innocents lost
2012: Benefit Of The Doubt

Tom Selleck is Jesse Stone! I don't know who author Robert B. Parker might have envisioned inhabiting his iconic small town police chief, but Selleck has certainly owned and perfected the role over the course of these 8 made-for-TV movies. Stone must surely be one of the most laid back heroes to ever grace the small screen and...
Soulful Detective Series
If you like a detective series with a soul, this Jesse Stone series offers it up in the form of haunting and original music, inspired scenery and sets (love Stone's waterside home), quirky and realistic plots, insightful casting, gorgeous cinematography, and a sensitive but tough detective with Tom Selleck playing Jesse Stone.

Jesse has a few of his own mysteries to solve, along with the ones he confronts in his work. Is he ever going to not answer the phone when his ex-wife calls and just forget about her? Will he be able to stop drinking? Can he keep his community happy in the small northeastern town he polices and hang onto his job? Will he ever find a woman who is sympatico?

In between battling his own demons, therapy sessions with his shrink (William Devane), and cryptic conversations with just about everybody including his dog, Jesse manages to solve quite a few crimes with his non-police manual methods.

In analyzing why this series is...
a FIVE STAR Series.... this collection features a $60 hat!!
I LOVE this series, own them all... would give this 5 stars for content, but value? ALL of these DVDs can be found for $5 each (that is $40 total folks) online or at discount stores...they have been available for some time and their value has dropped as DVDs often do. What we have here is the latest idea to package them all together and bundle them with a hat and list price it at $100.

Long time fans of Tom Selleck should enjoy his turn as a middle aged man with a complicated past. This series is an adult treat. Not a ton of action but a very enjoyable character study and this series is populated with terrific co stars like William Devane,Saul Rubinek, Stephen McHattie,Kathy Baker and William Sadler to name but a few.

My review isn't the series...that is 5 stars, Own em all, and I've watched them all at least twice. I'm reviewing the actual product that goes on sale next week. I saw it tonight at my local Barnes and Noble and was hoping it was something new...

Fill the Void

Moving Orthodox-Jewish family drama
"Fill the Void" (2012 release from Israel; 90 min.) brings a very intimate look into the world of Israel's ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community. As the movie opens, we get to know Shira, an 18 year old woman who is keeping her eyes open about her marriage options (she secretly has her eyes on a young man whom she meets from afar in the dairy section of the grocery store). We also get to know Shira's older sister Esther, who is nine months pregnant with her first-born and due any minute. Then disaster strikes and Esther dies in labor, leaving a big void to fill in the lives of her loved ones: her sister Shira, her mother, and of course her husband Yochay, not to mention the new-born baby. It's not long thereafter that Yochay is contemplating offers for a new marriage, including one from Belgium, as well as one from Frieda, a friend of Shira's and Esther's, and also Shira herself at the insistence of Shira's and Esther's mother. At this point we are only about 30 minutes into the movie...
What would you do?
I enjoyed this movie because it gave me food for thought. It posed basic ethical and consequence questions in a fresh and interesting way. What would you do if you were placed in a situation where your potential future well being and happiness came because of another's death? How much does family loyalty and cultural norms mean to you in the face of your personal truth and honor?

Shira, the would be new wife of her sister's dead husband is confronted with these ethical issues. The writer and actors masterfully show us the journey to the final decision. This movie is also a touching and sensitive snapshot of an orthodox jew's outlook on problem solving; such as the community involvement, family closeness (sometimes positive, sometimes negative) and going to G-D in prayer for help.

I say well done and worth watching a few times to enjoy the quiet messages and symbolism.
Shame on Sony
Review of the film: Breathtaking, Absolute Perfection. No more words needed.

Review of the Abhorrent Studio releasing this to the US home market: (that would be Sony):
Horrid imbeciles who Must Be On Drugs.

They have deemed this glorious work of art to be only worth a DVD and are not releasing this at all on Blu-Ray. You read that correctly. Not a typo. They should fire themselves for being so ignorant of the market of people who will actually spend money to purchase this masterpiece.

The discerning folk who love this film are exactly the demographic who long ago switched to Blu-Ray and have tossed our outdated 1990's DVD players into the trash bin or buried them underground to be discovered in the future as the time capsule relic that DVD has been for some time now.

Good luck selling this in DVD format, Sony.

You have forced me to purchase the JAPANESE BOOTLEG BLU-RAY, which has double the resolution of your DVD and...

Bless Me, Ultima

See this Movie!!
We just came home from seeing Bless Me, Ultima at the theater. The beauty of this movie is breathtaking..... images, music, story. I highly recommend this film. Of course, the book by the same title written by Rudolfo Anaya is incredible and the movie does an excellent job of capturing the emotion of the book. I live in New Mexico and this film evokes the magic and majesty of the state.

I plan to purchase a copy of this film as soon as it is available.
Close To Perfection
I'm retired, and see 150-180 films a year. Bless Me, Ultima appeared in my local theatre with no hint it was coming via trailers or advertising. It is close to perfection. A good story for adult viewers, a beautiful
natural setting, and actors/acting for which you can only feel affection. This is a gem appreciated by small
audiences.
Culture Clash in New Mexico
Based on the novel by Rudolfo Anaya, this PG-13 coming-of-age story is set in rural New Mexico late in WWII. When a New Mexican boy starts the first grade in 1944, he carries a red Big Chief tablet identical to the one I carried to the first grade in 1945! When his much-loved grandmother arrives to spend her last days with his family, he can't help but notice that an owl also has taken up residence.

He sees a culture clash that includes traditional ways, witchcraft, Catholicism, and just a bit of secular U.S. Army after his adult brothers return from the war.

We see:
* Luke Ganalon (television roles) as Antonio, the super-observant first grader who witnesses the fatal actions of an hysterical posse, the bullying of a lonely classmate, the damage wrought by a faithless priest, the inspiration of a wonderful school teacher, and the healing powers of his beloved abuela.
* Miriam Colon ("The Southside") is Ultima, the healer who is immediately called on...

The Kings of Summer

A must see for young teens & parents. The kid that plays Biaggio really steals the movie and is so much fun to watch. I say A
"We do swear, under pain of friendship lost, to never speak of this enterprise to any adults; to never betray its location or its participants." Joe (Robinson) and Patrick (Basso) both hate their lives at home. Living with over bearing parents are making them crazy and when they are pushed too far they decide to move out. The find a place in the middle of the woods and build their own house. The two of them along with a young boy who they are afraid to tell to go away start off on a experience that effects each one differently. This is an example of a movie where the trailer doesn't do the movie justice. This is an excellent and must see movie for all teenagers for a few reasons. One is because it shows that their parents aren't as bad as they seem compared to these. I could go on and on about this but the best way to describe this is a Stand By Me for a new generation. This is is movie that just needs to be seen rather then read about. Also the kid that plays Biaggio really steals...
An Entertaining Coming -of-Age Comedy
THE KINGS OF SUMMER is an entertaining coming-of-age movie, reminiscent of STAND BY ME, but with a lighter touch.

Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and Biaggio (Moises Arias) are a trio of Mid-West teens who have decided to flee their parents. Joe's dad (Nick Offerman) is a wisecracking, insensitive "s.o.b.". Patrick's folks (Megan Mullally, Marc Evan Jackson) are on the "creepy" side, and, except for one brief scene, we don't really meet Biaggio's parents, but he's a bit "weird," so that should tell us something.

The truth is that, from a teenager's standpoint, all parents are insensitive, creepy and/or weird.

In an ultimate act of independence, the three boys decide to spend their summer building a ramshackle house in the woods and living off the land. The house goes up amazingly fast, and while the parents and the police (led by Mary Lynn Rajskub) search for them, the teens have a great time. The adventure, however, turns south when...

This movie delves into the male adolescent mind like no other movie before it. It accomplishes all it sets out to do. Awesome.

I Dream of Jeannie: The Complete Series

Functionality nightmare! Read before buying!
The episodes are great & I want to make it clear that I love this series. I have no complaints with the episodes or the quality of the episodes.

The problem is with the functionality of the nightmare packaging, the DVD indexing, the ear-blasting irritating audio on the Menu and inconsistent labeling vs menu designations. I recommend you read this before buying this cute set. You might change your mind and get a set with normal packaging after you read about the nightmare you will go through just to watch the DVD's.

The packaging is cute... if you don't ever plan to watch the episodes. However, if you do plan to watch them, when you remove the disk sleeves from the bottle, do NOT set it down because you will end up with disks everywhere. The sleeves cannot be set down because they cannot support themselves upright without the bottle... so it flops over and the disks all fall out. The sleeves are an open accordion/slinky style design, made from thin cardboard. This...
Very nice package. It could have been just a little better though.
I received mine the other day. The packaging is pretty nice. It has a clear plastic outer box with nice graphics. The discs are beautiful with high quality labeling and are also color coded by season. The video and audio quality is very good to excellent. The discs are kept in a colorful, fan-out style holder. The set also comes with 55 trivia cards packed in a nice, little fancy box. I have just a few issues, some little, some not so little. First, the 'bottle'. It's touted as a 'replica' but it's made of cardboard and only looks like the actual bottle from an image seen when turned to the side. A more realistic solid bottle would have been very cool even if made of only plastic. They could have put the discs and holder lying flat in the base and had the base removable. I know I'm going on but that's the way I would have done it. I doubt it would have cost them much more. Also, the discs are numbered 1 thru 20. It probably would have been better to group the disc...
Great DVD - Lousy and Dangerous Bottle
Altogether the collection is nice (although season 1 is colored)

My only deception with this collection is the "bottle". I own over 500 DVD's at home and this is THE single most hazardous box to hold a collection of DVD's.

Each DVD is inserted in a sleeve and all these sleeves are glued together in an "accordeon" type of holder. I use term "glued" very loosely: 1 tiny drop of glue at the top of the sleeve and another tiny one at the bottom.

Then you slip this "accordeon" sideways "inside" the "bottle". If you try to lift the bottle by its "neck", chances are all your DVD's will slip to the floor faster than Jeannie could blink!...

Even getting a DVD out of this "accordeon" is hazardous; picture 20 DVD's held in a barely glued cardboard Slinky and you will have a pretty accurate idea!!!

Word from the wise: forget about keeping the DVD'S it their original holder... Put your them in a safer box!

Before Midnight

An honest, gripping and intimate peak into a relationship
Let's first get two things out of the way. If you've seen BEFORE SUNRISE and/or BEFORE SUNSET and disliked them...there is no reason to give BEFORE MIDNIGHT a try. And if you haven't seen those movies at all, I HIGHLY recommend you do prior to checking out Richard Linklater's latest near classic.

I should also warn that even the most cursory mention of plot points in either the 2ndor the 3rdmovie can be construed as spoilers...but it's tough to talk about the 3rdfilm without giving away some surprise. I'll balance as best I can.

In BEFORE SUNRISE, young American Jesse (Ethan Hawke), age about 23 meets young Frenchwoman Celine (Julie Delpy), age about 23. They are on a train bound for Vienna. Jesse is flying back to the US from Vienna the morning after the train arrives. Celine is on her way back to Paris after visiting family in Budapest. They strike up a conversation and clearly hit it off right away. Jesse asks Celine to get off the train with him and...
Another must-see chapter in the endearing "Before" franchise
When we last saw Jessie and Celine now already nine years ago, Jessie looked as if he was about to miss his flight back to the US and instead choosing to stay with Celine in Paris. And now we get the third installment of this fanastic mini-franchise.

As "Before Midnight" (2013 release; 109 min.) opens, we see Jessie (played by Ethan Hawke) dropping off his 13 yr. old son Hank at the Kalamata airport in the Peloponnese peninsula in Greece. From their conversation we learn that Hank spent the summer with Jessie and Celine on vacation in Greece. As Jessie gets to his car to drive off, we see Celine (played by Julie Delpy) and... their 7 yr. old twin daughters Ella and Nina! So yes indeed, Celine and Jessie became a couple, living in Paris, and now the parents of 2 girls. The remainder of the movie plays out that rest of the afternoon and evening, and to tell you much more of the 'plot' would surely ruin your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all...
Talk to me ...
I'm new to the whole `Before...' trilogy. I understand that I'm probably the one in a million who hadn't seen any of the parts, but it is a truth I can't hide from. Back in 2004, when the internet was abuzz of talk over `Before Sunset' and critics were raving Julie Delpy's performance and the Oscars were nominating its screenplay I was under a rock. Well, to be completely honest, I wasn't under a rock as much as I was too lazy to want to watch `Before Sunrise' and there was no way I was going to watch a sequel without watching the first film. So this year I finally buckled. With all the critical praise for `Before Midnight' I knew that I was going to eventually HAVE to see this movie, and so I Netflix'd `Before Sunrise' and `Before Sunset' and had myself a `Before...' marathon. Yes, I got up early this morning and watched the first two films and then got in my car and sat in a theater and indulged in the conclusion to this romantic trifecta (or is it?).

In all...

After Earth (+UltraViolet Digital Copy)

Not your typical Will Smith movie
I'll try not to give the plot away but my overall opinion is that this is a mediocre rental at best. I had high hopes for this movie as I'm a fan of post apocalyptic movies and futuristic movies. Adding Will Smith's good acting to the mix had me thinking this was a sure hit. Unfortunately-the movie follows his son Jaden Smith, whose acting skills are less than stellar. Will Smith does start out in the movie with a majority of the scenes but 15 minutes into the film and his exposure is cut to a him communicating with his son through basically a wrist walkie talkie. He is not involved in any of the action sequences in the movie and Jaden Smith's acting skills are not developed enough to carry a movie in my opinion. I can only assume he was cast in this movie as a favor to his father. Will's performance as a strict futuristic military type father is just ok as his character is supposed to come across as a very strict-almost unfeeling father and yet it's just stiff acting at best...
Not a good movie
I'm sorry to say I paid full price to see this movie in the theater. I felt robbed. I love science fiction and I am a Will Smith fan so what could go wrong? Everything. This movie was slow and the characters were not likable. The acting was horrendous and the plot....was there a plot, I can't remember I was so bored. I'm sorry to say I will never get that hour and a half of my life back. I'm giving it two stars because the special effects were decent.
I expected more!!!
I watched the movie first and did not read any reviews for it. I did hear this movie wasn't that good, but I gave it a shot anyways. Not surprised that there are mostly negative reviews than positive reviews on here. Anyways, let's get on with my review.

I thought this movie does have the story going for it, but you really have to "pay attention" to what is being said in the beginning of the movie. If you miss anything from what they told you, than most likely, you're going to get a little lost into it. The story is very interesting. Earth is slowly becoming an inhabitable planet, and so, the military made a department division called, The Rangers core. The Rangers go out and try to locate a new planet for Earth's people to live on. Eventually, they did find a new planet, Nova Prime, and the people of Earth move relocate there. They do find out that they were not alone on the planet. The Aliens of that world try to kill the humans by creating these new huge monsters that...

The Swan Princess Christmas

Fans of the original avoid this movie!
I have always been a fan of The Swan Princess Movies. The first was released when I was a kid and even though I am now in college, I can honestly say I still highly enjoy the series and probably will for a long time. As you can imagine, when I found out that there was a fourth movie to the series released this past year (2012) I was ecstatic. However, upon watching this movie, I found that it was all in vain.

WARNING! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!
Also, this is a rather long review.

Where to begin. Well, I had to take two sittings to watch this. The first time I barely pasted the four minute mark. My first complaint was the animation, which looked like terrible CGI from a computer game back in the 90's, mainly in the beginning, but there were also other parts, I found in my second shot at attempting to watch this, that the animation lacked again. The music also wasn't matching the feel of the other movies. Mind you, this was all a first judging...
Meh.... mildly ok definately horrible
When compaired to the other movies of this series this HAS to be the most HORRIBLE Swan Princess EVER! Crappy out of place music( none of the orginality or pep of the first movies), medicore voice acting and above all else....... Animation that makes one PUKE! None of the characters look or act like themselves (Except maybe Rothbart- but he even then he was changed to childish SAP! rather then the totally coolest bad guy EVER that he was in the first movie.) I think it might have been alright if they'd stuck to the original animation style and kept the feel of the original 3 movies- but instead they tried something new and frankly.... it fell flat on it's face. Waste of a good plot (Which is the ONLY upside to this movie) if you ask me.

Don't waste your money.. seriously... this movie isn't worth 50 cents never mind what it's listed at. If you want something Swan Princess go buy the first 3, they are way more worth your time and dollars.
This was so bad we actually had to stop and switch to a diferent movie. BAD everything. Do NOT waste you money or time on this.
We loved the first Swan Princess movie and were looking forward to watching this new Swan Princess movie Christmas day as a family. I can't say enough about how bad this movie is. The animation is bad, the plot is scary for young kids, the characters bounced back and forth between being set in historical time and then they start rocking out and there is multiple makeout sessions between characters.

This is a terrible movie.

Don't waste your money or worse your time, and possibly a little of your soul, by watching this movie.

Grown Ups 2 (Two Disc Combo: Blu-ray / DVD + UltraViolet Digital Copy)

THERE'S A RAFT IN THERE?
The sequel comes with very little plot. Our foursome all have their child issues. David Spade suddenly has a long lost son so he doesn't miss out on the fun. There is an 80's theme party with a ridiculous townies vs. college boys fight.

The humor is still crude, but perhaps a bit less than before as I found it tolerable. The film mostly relies on one liners and insults as is typical in a Sandler production. This film also highlights the talents or lack thereof of many Hollywood larvae including the Sandler clan, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Paulina Gretzky. Team Jacob fans can watch Taylor Lautner in an uncredited role as Fratboy Andy. My how they have fallen.

Will work as a rental. No hurry to rush out and see it.

Parental Guide: Brief male rear nudity. 1 f-bomb. No sex. Sex talk and general crudeness including urination, feces, and fart humor.
Best comedy of the year
As if the movie 'Grown Ups' could get any funnier, they go and make Grown Ups 2 and completely blow everyone away! This movie had an amazing cast, tons of jokes, and a good plot. Shaq and Stone Cold guest star and it's a real hoot!
Awful, yet hilarious at times
Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade team-up again for Grown-Ups 2. So of course there's plenty of poop jokes, puke flying everywhere and tons of childish humor. But this time the movie is a little bit more than Sandler just hanging out with his buddies and getting paid for it. The film just jumps from one scene to another with not much of a plot at all, but this Happy Madison film accomplished something neverless, it made me laugh a lot!
There's tons of bad acting and bad humor, that a director of a bad spoof movie would appreciate but I'm guilty, I actually was into a lot of the movie. Grown-Ups 2 is awful, while actually being some-what entertaining at the same time. I can't say that about most other recent Sandler movies. Still though, I have to ask, why is the talented Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire) in yet another Adam Sandler movie ?
