PAINFUL SECRETS

Painful Secrets aka Secret Cutting
I saw this movie, "Painful Secrets", a long time ago on Lifetime Network. I have literally been waiting since I saw the movie years ago to buy it. I was dissapointed when I found out I couldn't buy it! I am so excited that this movie is out on DVD... finally! I preordered it and bought it asap :) I have struggled with cutting and feeling like I belong, so it is nice to watch a movie about it, knowing that other girls go through it as well.
This movie is about a teenage girl named Dawn, who struggles with fitting in and feeling loved from her parents. You start off watching the movie where she already cuts herself. She gets teased by the popular girls throughout this whole movie. She is seeing a guy that she thinks really likes her at first but then turns out he just wants sex. She meets a girl named Lorranie that has a drug addiction and Lorranie introduces Dawn to her counlsor. Dawn eventually ends up seeking help, but that doesn't stop her vicious cutting cycle.
You see...
Painfully honest and refreshing
This movie shows very accurately the chaos that many self-harmers experience. Very hard for someone who doesn't understand self-harm to watch, and possibly harder and possibly triggering for someone who does self-harm. A well-made film with well-cast actors, a fitting score, and an edge-of-your-seat plot. You will shed some tears.
Made-for-TV Movie about a VERY IMPORTANT Issue Affecting Many People (especially Teenagers)......with Mostly HORRENDOUS Casting!
"Painful Secrets" (also called "Secret Cutting") is a made-for-TV movie that originally aired on the USA Network cable channel on May 30, 2000. It is VERY, VERY LOOSELY based on Steven Levenkron's teen novel The Luckiest Girl in the World and is about the very real & important issue of self-injury in which its sufferers deliberately cut, burn or otherwise hurt themselves in order to cope & deal with their lives and its difficulties & traumas.

Self-mutilation (another term for self-injury) is an increasingly prevalent phenomenon that occurs primarily with teenage girls (though it DOES affect those of other age groups and/or genders). It is differentiated from suicide attempts in that self-injurers do NOT have any overt intent to kill themselves (though admittedly, for some or many self-mutilators [including myself], any accidental death resulting from self-injury would've been/would be an "added bonus")...
